From today on, delegations of 28 countries will be in Poços de Caldas to join the International Earth Science Olympiad. The event will bring together 250 students and teachers in a knowledge competition about geosphere, astronomy, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Poços de Caldas was the chosen city to host the event because it occupies a highly strategic geographical location, due to its proximity to São Paulo (243 km), Belo Horizonte (460 km) and Rio de Janeiro (470 km), whose connections are made with good highways. Known for its thermal baths, the city has many resort hotels.

The climate is characterized by dry winters and mild summers. The winter is from April to September and has an average temperature of 15°C and the summer is from October to March and has an average temperature of 21 °C. The local soils are rich in minerals and yield thorium, zirconium, and bauxite.

For this reason, several activities will take place over the eight days of event. The official opening ceremony will be on the Monday 14th, at 9:30 am, in the auditorium of Palace Casino. Besides, the theoretical tests will also take place in the Palace Hotel, meanwhile the practical ones will happen at Sierra of Santo Domingo and at Veil of Brides Waterfall. The closing ceremony, along with the awards, will happen at the Palace Casino auditorium, on the Sunday 20th, at 8 am.

Nevertheless, to perform the IESO, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of South of Minas Gerais (IFSULDEMINAS) has the support of the Ministry of Education, the partnership of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), and the collaboration of the University of Campinas, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Federal University of Juiz de Fora, University of São Paulo, Federal University of Alfenas, Federal University of Itajubá and the municipality of Poços de Caldas.

Created in 2008, IFSULDEMINAS was built from the merger of three old agro-technical schools, located in the counties of Inconfidentes, Machado and Muzambinho. Thus, these three units have become a campus, forming a single institution and assuming a new commitment to the regional development through excellence in vocational and technological education.

Today, IFSULDEMINAS is honored to host this big event in the city of Poços de Caldas and welcome to all participants.
